Peter Godwin began exhibiting his work in 1978. A graduate of the National Art School, Peter also lectured in painting and drawing at the school for many years. In 2002 he began regularly exhibiting at Defiance Gallery where his work quickly attracted the attention of collectors nationally and internationally.

Godwin was awarded the Art Gallery of New South Wales Gruner Prize in 1979 and again in 1985. He has been a recipient of the Mosman Art Prize and has also hung as a finalist in the Sulmam Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW. He is currently scheduled to exhibit a major survey of his work at Orange Regional Gallery in 2024.
